Jackfruit idli or halasina hannina kadubu is steamed rice cake. A traditional dish from Karnataka especially coastal and malnad regions. This recipe is glutenfree and vegan.
Jackfruit is a versatile fruit and so as the name for this dish. Every region calls this super aromatic dish in its own language like halasina hannina kadubu or gatti, ponsa idli in Konkani. Every year this is a must make jackfruit dish in my house.
Traditionally this is cooked in banana leaves and steamed. This adds the flavour of banana leaves too. I find it difficult to access banana leaves near my surroundings. So I prepare them in normal idli mould. They are served as breakfast or for tea time snack. They are served warm with a dollop of ghee, which makes it even more delicious. Serving with ghee is optional, to make it vegan serve it plain or any coconut chutney.
How to prepare a well cooked jackfruit idli
The proportion of Jackfruit and rice is very important in this recipe. Since there isn’t any urd dal in the recipe like the normal idli to make them soft and fluffy. But not to worry much as jackfruit and coconut imparts softness to the kadubu. If you add more of idli rava it becomes hard while less of idli rava makes it fragile and sicks to fingers after steam cooking.
Steam the idli properly. Cool them and then remove from the moulds. This prevents uneven edges and you get complete round idlies.

Let’s see how to cook this delicious jackfruit sweet idli
Add water to idli rava and keep this aside for 15 minutes. Now prepare the jackfruit coconut paste. Take a high speed blender, add finely chopped ripe jackfruit, fresh coconut, jaggery powder, cardamom and make a fine paste.
(Adding cardamom is completely optional, jackfruit idli can be prepared plain or clove powder can also be added).
Mix the jackfruit coconut paste with soaked rice rava, salt and adjust the consistency with water. Keep aside for 30 minutes. This helps the idli rava to absorb the flavours, moisture from jackfruit coconut paste and blends well. The batter will be thick dropping consistency. Pour this into oil smeared moulds.
Steam cook for 20 minutes. Allow them to cool for 5 to 10 minutes. Now using a spoon, loosen the sides and remove the kadubu or idli.
Serve them with ghee and enjoy this jackfruit flavoured sweet idli.
