Benefits of avocados
Avocado is also called as alligator pear in Mexico or butter fruit in many parts of India and has many health benefits. Let’s see their benefits.
Avocado fruit is low in sugar, high in fiber. They are high in calories.
Contain high amount of fat therefore form an incredibly good substitute for fat content in healthy bakes.
They contain more of monounsaturated fat which helps lower bad cholesterol.
Loaded with vitamins and minerals. They are good source of vitamin B helping in fight infection.
Fruits are usually stored at room temperature and ripened within 4 to 5 days with change in outer skin from green to slightly brown.
If you have more avocados during the season, freeze them so that you can use it later to make these brownies.
Make sure to bring them to room temperature before use.
What can I do with Avocado?
Avocado pulp is used in bakes, dips, milkshakes, salads, pasta.
Avocado are eaten raw with honey and black pepper. Chopped and used in salads, on toast. They are great substitute for mayonnaise.
Served as guacamole, used in soups and preserved as pickles. These can be used in dairy free ice creams.
Since avocados are high in healthy fat content also dietary fiber, act as great egg substitute.
Have you realized these are great for preparing yummy fudgy gooey brownies beyond guacamole?
Here is a simple recipe of preparing the brownies using avocado.
Why use avocado in brownies?
Using fruits in healthy bake is great way to include some nutrition in baking.
I always prefer using the fruits in their natural form.
But my kids do not like to eat these healthy raw avocados. Here comes the mom cap, and I thought of including them in the bake.
I got the concept of using avocado in brownies after reading this glutenfree recipe
However, the recipe I have given in this post is not glutenfree and made many changes as per my requirement.
If your kids are fussy about eating avocado, now I am sure you know what to do!!!!
Adding avocado to brownies may sound weird.
But when you add cocoa powder and chocolate chunks, that is double chocolate, these mask the subtle flavours of avocado.
These are double chocolate healthy brownies!!!!
I have not eaten any brownie as fudgy, gooey, and moist as these brownies.
Avocado provide creamy and gooey texture to brownies.
The buttery nature of avocado makes them great substitute for butter in healthy bakes.
Great egg substitute for brownies.
So, in conclusion, when you plan to bake an eggless butter free or any dairy free brownie, you end up making a dry brownie.
Avocado comes to the rescue, making a great substitute.
List of ingredients and equipments for vegan avocado brownies
Below is the list of ingredients and equipments used in this recipe and their link to the products
Avocado puree – Medium sized avocado is used in this recipe.
I have cut open the avocado, throw the seed, remove the pulp and grind into fine paste without adding water.
If using small avocado then take two fruits and puree the pulp.
Whole wheat flour – I have used milled whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour.
If this is not available use the flour available from stores.
We want fudgy and dense brownies so do not get tempted to add more flour than mentioned in the recipe.
The more flour, they taste as cake.
Cane sugar powder – Cane sugar powder is used instead of regular refined sugar in making these avocado brownies.
Hot water – to bloom the cocoa powder
Cooking oil – In addition to avocado as fat source, we add oil in this recipe to make it dairy free brownies.
Any refined oil of preference or coconut oil can be used.
Chocolate chunks – Chopped unsweetened vegan dark chocolate pieces are added for extra chocolate flavour
Cocoa powder – unsweetened cocoa powder https://amzn.to/3446ztX
Baking powder – to help the brownies rise
Vanilla essence and salt – to enhance and balance the flavours
To bake these easy and quick brownies, equipment’s all you need are listed below
A baking pan: aluminium baking square pan 8 x 8 inch
Parchment paper – prevents the brownies from sticking to the pan
Mixing bowl: I use these regularly for mixing the dry and wet ingredients
A high-speed blender to make smooth puree of the avocado pulp
Oven A good oven to get a perfectly baked brownie
Why do we add hot water in the recipe?
This recipe is cocoa powder-based brownie, so hot water is used to bloom the cocoa powder.
When hot liquid is used this helps to dissolve and bloom the cocoa powder and brings out the maximum flavour.
Why oil is used in this recipe?
This recipe is made of oil instead of butter. This creates an ultra-moist texture to brownies with a shiny top.
How to make easy vegan avocado brownies?
These are good for people with dairy and egg allergy. A guiltfree dessert recipe.
Puree the avocado into smooth paste and keep this aside for further use.
I use an OTG for my bakes. This is how I pre-heat, a rack is placed at the middle and oven is preheated at 180°C for 15 mins.
Coat the baking pan with cooking oil. Line the pan with parchment paper leaving an overhang on both sides of the pan.
This helps in easy removal of brownies from pan. Set this aside.
In a bowl, sift the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt and powdered cane sugar until these are well combined.
Add chopped dark chocolate chunks and mix well, so that flour coats the chocolate. Set this aside for further use.
(coating the chocolate with flour avoids them from settling at the bottom and sticking to pan during baking)
In a separate bowl mix together well pureed avocado and oil. Mix well until it becomes creamy.
Add hot water, mix well. Add vanilla essence and mix once.
Mixing dry ingredients and wet ingredients
Add the sieved dry ingredients in two portions.
Next add half of the flour mixture and mix gently.
At the end add the remaining flour mixture. Mix gently.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30 minutes in preheated oven at 180°C.
After 25 minutes, when the top of the brownie is set, and a toothpick inserted comes out clean with only few crumbs attached.
Remove from oven and allow the brownies to cool down completely before slicing into squares.
If you want to speed up the cooling, place the baked goodie in refrigerator for half an hour.
After brownies have cooled completely, remove brownies from pan and slice them with serrated knife. Serve and relish the super moist gooey brownies.
When do you say avocado brownies are done?
Generally, brownie is baked for 25 to 30 minutes based on the size of pan and quantity of batter.
After 25 minutes, insert a toothpick at the center and check the doneness.
If there is more batter sticking, then needs some more time of baking.
If there are only few moist crumbs sticking then these brownies are done.
Do not overcook. if you want cake like texture, bake for longer time. This will make the brownie dry and cakey texture.
How long can we store these avocado brownies?
If you plan to store the brownies for 2 to 3 days, refrigerate them in airtight container
Separate each brownie piece with parchment paper and place in airtight container.
Flavours remain intact, so these are great for meal prep and great party dessert.
Important key notes to get perfect avocado brownies
Before we wrap up with the detailed recipe, I wanted to give few important points to keep in mind:
In this recipe, avocados should be completely ripe and soft.
Just make sure to puree the avocado into smooth paste without adding any water.
Otherwise you will get chunks of avocados when you bite brownies.
The softer and smooth texture of avocados makes the brownies better.
These are super easy to make. However, I highly recommend cooling them completely or refrigerate before slicing them as these are super moist.
Would you like to experiment, then check these add on?
To enhance the chocolate flavour, you can always add some espresso powder.
If you are bored of vanilla flavour with chocolate, try adding ½ tsp of cinnamon instead of vanilla.
Get creative by add few chopped nuts into the batter. You can also top with chocolate chips.
Substitutions you can make to avocado brownies
You can use any type of odourless refined oil in this recipe. If you can bear the flavour of coconut oil, then same can be used here.
You can use chocolate chips instead of chopped chocolate chunks.
Any refined free sugar can be used instead of cane sugar. I am sure coconut sugar will also uplift the flavours to the brownies.
My family members love to eat their bakes on a slight sweetish side.
So, I always end up adding an extra dose of cane sugar.
If you feel like adding a tablespoon less of sweetener, then you can surely do so.
You can also add any chopped nuts if you are not allergic to nuts.
I have not tried with glutenfree flours, may be if any of you try do post me with the updates.
Cocoa powder
I have used dark dutch-processed unsweetened cocoa powder in this recipe.
I normally use light coloured natural cocoa powder for baking. However, this time I was gifted with dutch processed cocoa powder.
You can use any cocoa powder available in your pantry for baking these brownies.
The only difference you find is the dark colour of the final baked output when dutch processed cocoa powder is used.
You can always go by the taste preference.
If you want to read on dutch processed or dark cocoa powder check this article.
