Fresh turmeric rhizome is locally called as turmeric roots. It is the key ingredient used in this smoothie with curcumin an anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, lowering the risk of many heart ailments.

Pineapple is healthy tropical fruit with numerous health benefits like with lots of vitamin C, manganese, dietary fiber.
Banana another tropical fruit is rich in fiber, antioxidants and potassium. This also adds to thickness of smoothie.
Almonds are fiber rich, natural fat content, magnesium for healthy bone, helps in maintaining iron content for haemoglobin and naturally available vitamin E. It helps in thickness of smoothie.
Chia seeds are rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fattyacids, proteins and fiber content.
Chia seeds add slight crunch to the smoothie along with fiber and protein.
Coconut milk is rich in fiber and fat content making smoothie creamy and also add to sweetness.

What do you need to make this smoothie?
You only need a few ingredients to make this smoothie bowl.
Below is the list of ingredients to make fresh turmeric smoothie. The best part is it is sugar less smoothie, a vegan smoothie recipe and also glutenfree smoothie.
It is super simple and easy to make and includes some healthy ingredients
Pineapple – This tropical fruit is essentially the base for this smoothie. The sweet and tart flavors of pineapple is so delicious. Here I have used frozen pineapple.
If you plan to use fresh ones, take firm ones and not overly ripe ones.
Banana – This is one fruit available year around. It gives the smoothie a creamy texture.
In this smoothie I have used frozen banana chunks. Any banana variety can be used however they should be ripe and sweet. The variety I have used is Robusta variety.
Almonds – Blanched almonds are used in this recipe, it adds to thickness and creaminess of smoothie.
Chia seeds – I have added a tablespoon of chia seeds considering its goodness.
Fresh turmeric root (grated) – Fresh turmeric can be added in the form paste or grated. I have peeled and used the root in this recipe.
Black pepper powder – Black pepper powder adds a tinch of spiciness to smoothie. I have used homemade black pepper powder.
Coconut milk – I have used coconut milk for aroma and richness. However, you can use any non-dairy milk for this smoothie. This time I have used store brought coconut milk for the smoothie.
Add water if you want the smoothie to be of pouring consistency otherwise you need not add water.

There are so many variations of this smoothie all over. They are also called golden milk smoothie, tropical smoothies and other numerous names.
You will find so many variations but one idea remains constant is how healthy this smoothie is for you!

To start with, you will want to chop the fruits that you want to include in the smoothie.
Chop them into cubes and freeze them. I have frozen them overnight before making smoothie.
Simple quick steps you can follow. There is a quick step by step video in the recipe card, have a look at it.
Take a highspeed blender, add all the ingredients that is frozen pineapple, frozen banana, blanched almonds, chia seeds.
Next add in grated fresh turmeric roots, black pepper powder and coconut milk. Blend it until the mixture becomes smooth.
Adjust the taste and flavors as per preference.
For example, if you want it to be more thick add less of coconut milk. Other way if you want it to be thin, add more milk or fresh fruits, or a spoon water.
If you want more spice, then add a bit more of pepper powder.
Pour in bowls and top it with freshly chopped fruits. Serve this healthy bowl of fresh turmeric smoothie and enjoy!!!

Can you put fresh turmeric in smoothies?
When you have fresh turmeric roots season, use them in your every-day-cooking. So this fresh turmeric is good for smoothies as well, but in moderation.
IMPORTANT NOTE: BE CAREFUL AS FRESH TURMERIC ROOTS STAINS EVERYTHING IT COMES IN CONTACT SO USE GLOVES WHILE PEELING OR CHOPPING THEM. WASH THE UTENSILS IMMEDIATELY TO REMOVE ANY STAINS.
How much fresh turmeric roots should I add?
If you are new to fresh turmeric roots then add half of whats mentioned in the recipe.
The more you add, brighter it becomes. Moreover, extra turmeric will make the smoothie bitter and strong in flavours.
Generally, I do not recommend adding more of fresh turmeric, as everything in moderation is good for our body.

Can I replace fresh turmeric with dry turmeric powder
Fresh turmeric is a seasonal produce in India and most parts of the world.
So, we must find an alternative to fresh turmeric roots when they are not in season. The best option is freshly powdered turmeric powder can be added.
Add same quantity as mentioned in recipe if the powder is fresh. Otherwise add more for intense flavours and colours.
How to make smoothie thick?
As the name smoothie suggests that its thick in consistency and smooth in texture.
However, no worries, if you want them less thick, then add water or coconut milk more, to make it more thin in consistency.
Almond in the recipes also adds to thickness of the smoothie. Frozen fruit pieces used in the recipe also adds to thickness of this powerpack smoothie bowl.
Why use frozen fruit for smoothie?
Smoothie can be made with both fresh fruit or frozen fruit. Frozen fruits gives an icy thick texture to smoothies. Freeze the fruit cubes overnight or until use. Use these frozen fruits to make smoothie.
If you add ice cubes, it will dilute the smoothie and reduces the flavour and sweetness. This makes us add extra sweetener to smoothie.
Instead, if you freeze them, it creates thick texture when pureed with natural sweetness from fruits. If you want a spoonable smoothie then, reduce the liquid ingredients.
The smoothie remains chill if frozen fruits are used and you need not refrigerate further before serving.
How to make blanched almonds?
The healthy natural fats in almonds help in absorption of turmeric by our body.
I have used blanched almonds here.
Do you know how to blanch almonds, here I am giving simple method.
First add almonds to boiling water, boil for a minute. Cool a bit and remove the skin and use it for smoothie.
What are the sweeteners used?
In this recipe, I have not used sweeteners.
All the sweetness comes naturally from pineapple and banana.
I have used sweet pineapple in this recipe. So I have not used any artificial sweetener.
If you are using a slightly tangy pineapple, then use an sweetener like sugar, honey, maple syrup or cane sugar, liquid jaggery, soft pitted dates.
If you are using sweeteners then the colour of the smoothie changes.
Can we make it in advance?
I prefer the smoothie to be fresh as they taste the best.
May be an hour or two of refrigeration is fine. Give the smoothie a good shake before you plan to serve.
Substitutes
To get the same results like the colour, taste then follow the recipe as it is. However, if you want to know few of the substitutes, then check these
For pineapple – you can substitute with mango pieces.
For banana – any variety banana can be used.
Coconut milk – you can use normal milk, cashew milk, almond milk, or oats milk. However, the taste may vary as per their use.
For this recipe I have used only coconut milk. If any of you use these alternative milks then I would love to know how it tasted.
For blanched almonds – you can use natural almonds as well. A slight change in colour of smoothie can be expected due to skin colour of almonds.

- Almonds or badam – 20 nos (blanched & deskinned)
- Chia seeds – 1 tbsp
- Fresh turmeric root (grated) – 1 tsp
- Black pepper – 1 tsp
- Coconut milk – ½ cup
- Add water if required to adjust consistency
- For toppings:
- Freshly chopped fruits like pineapple banana, and some almonds for crunchiness.
