Few tips and variations in preparing turmeric milk
Do not add more turmeric root, this will give bitter taste. If you don’t like the strong pungent smell of turmeric, then add little less.
Use good quality saffron from a reliable source to get proper benefits of saffron.
Since I grow my own turmeric, prefer to use the fresh turmeric roots when they are in season. During other days of the year I use freshly ground turmeric powder especially for this golden milk.
If you do not have access to fresh turmeric roots, use good quality turmeric powder to replace the roots.
This drink can be made vegan by replacing the milk with coconut milk or almond milk. It is not mandatory to strain the milk, instead the milk can be kept aside for few minutes for the solids to settle down, then this can be served.
If saffron is not available, this can be skipped and plain turmeric milk with ginger and black pepper can be prepared.
Other variations of this milk are adding simple Indian spices like cinnamon, saunf cardamom. As per research black pepper helps in absorption of turmeric by our body.
Do not boil the milk for too long, this removes all the good benefits of turmeric. If turmeric is boiled for long duration at high temperature, curcumin (active ingredient) gets broken down.
As suggested by our ayurvedic doctor this turmeric saffron milk can be taken every alternative day as these turmeric roots are much stronger and intense in flavor than turmeric powder. If giving to very small kids, ensure they are not allergic to fresh turmeric with symptoms like burning sensation or nausea.
Sweetener for turmeric saffron milk
You can choose a sweetener you like to add to this milk. Sugar, honey, maple syrup, jaggery powder or any other. While adding jaggery make sure you add in the end with boiling on low flame.
Detailed recipe
Here is the recipe, if you happen to make this recipe, do give your feedback and rate it.
Heat water in a saucepan. As water starts boiling, add de-skinned and finely grated turmeric roots.
Next add deskinned and grated ginger to the same boiling water. Add black pepper powder as per taste. Cook this for next 2 minutes so that all flavors are infused into the water.
Add saffron strands and milk to this boiling mixture. Boil this milk for 3-4 minutes. Now the color of the milk changes to golden yellow color.
Turmeric saffron milk could be diluted with some more water at this point. Add sugar to this and boil until sugar just melts.
In other method, switch off the heat and add jaggery or honey when the milk is just warm.
Now strain the milk and the other option is to allow the solids to settle down. Serve hot / warm healthy turmeric saffron milk.
