Ingredient Notes
Here is a list of key ingredients used in making baked chocolate chip granola bar bites
Oats – I have used both oats flour and whole oats in this recipe. Whole oats give crunch to the granola squares. Oats flour gives a good binding to the granola bites. Flour can be either store brought or can be homemade. Quick oats or rolled oats can be ground into fine powder. For this recipe you can use old fashioned rolled oats.
If you want a glutenfree oats, make sure to buy a certified glutenfree oats.
Corn flakes powder – I have coarsely powdered corn flakes in this recipe. You can use plain corn flakes or any flavoured ones.
Puffed rice – Used white unsalted puffed rice, locally called as kadalepuri or murmura or mandakki.
Ground Flaxseed powder – Helps in binding the ingredients together in the granola and make a great source of omega-3 fatty acid.
Mini chocolate chips – They are perfect to give chocolate flavour. I have used small sized chocolate chips. As we do not want them to completely melt or remain chunky we add them in two parts. These chocolate chips can be dark or semi-sweet.
Nutmeg powder – I have used nutmeg powder to flavour these. You can use store brought or home ground.
Sweeteners – Dates, cane sugar and liquid jaggery is used in this recipe as sweeteners. They work as a cheaper alternative to maple syrup which is slightly pricy. Finely chopped dates are used. These sweeteners also help in binding the granola and prevent them falling apart.
Nuts and seeds – Nuts of choice can be used; I have used almonds and pumpkin seeds. Almonds are chopped and mixed. They add healthy fats and crunchiness to squares.

I love this recipe, but I don’t know what “sprig” means in the context of the recipe. Can you help?
Barbara Stecker
Sorry! I knew I should have re-read the recipe before asking. I was looking on the web, since the acronym was unfamiliar and wondered if it was available in Southern California where I live. We do have the synonym. I got involved in researching jaggery and its nutritional benefits and thought SPRIG would be easy to find, but it wasn’t. Thanks for this recipe and the manni one as my niece has a new baby and this looks great!
