Summers are meant for some homemade ice creams free of preservatives. These are generally high in calories. Every summer I prepare two to three types of ice cream and this is one of them.
We love ice cream and if its chocolate flavour, then it becomes even more irresistible.
In simple words, I say whip the fresh cream, mix in the condensed milk, cocoa powder and chocolate chips. Here is the ice cream base that is frozen until set.
My family loves ice cream, as kids are growing its so much fun and exciting process. And don’t you agree nothing can beat homemade ice cream.
Yeah that’s the reason I am sharing my favourite best homemade chocolate ice cream.
This ice cream is not overly sweet and simply perfect!!

This eggless double chocolate ice cream is made from following ingredients
Fresh thick cream – I have used Amul fresh cream of 25% fat.
Cocoa powder – Good quality unsweetened cocoa powder is used in this recipe.
Dark chocolate chips – I have used small bite sized chocolate chips.
Condensed milk – thick condensed milk is added as sweetener to chocolate ice cream. When measuring condensed milk, measure properly since its very thick in texture.

Tips and tricks for double chocolate ice cream recipe
Here are a few tips for making this ice cream perfectly at home.
For rich chocolate flavour, use good quality cocoa powder that you can afford for.
To get perfect consistency whipped cream, use chilled bowl on ice cubes, chilled whipping attachments and refrigerated fresh cream.
Use only upper thick fresh cream, do not use thin watery cream.
Do not over whip the fresh cream, because you might end up making butter.
Do not over mix the chocolate mixture and whipped cream, this releases all the air from whipped cream.
Always close and freeze the ice cream otherwise ice crystals will be formed.
You can add any extra add ins like chocolate chunks or an extra spoon of chocolate chips.
How to make double chocolate ice cream?
Freeze chill the whipping blades or attachments and whipping bowl overnight.
Also keep 6 to 8 ice cubes ready to be used during whipping process.
Refrigerate 25 % low fat fresh cream but do not freeze the cream.
If you are using tetra pack, then take only upper thick fresh cream. Make sure not to pour out the lower thin cream content.
Preparation of chocolate mixture
First step towards making this double chocolate ice cream is mixing condensed milk and cocoa powder.
Mix well without leaving any lumps in the mixture. Keep this aside until we whip the fresh cream.
Whipping fresh cream
Few important points to be kept in mind while whipping the fresh cream.
Here is a beginner’s guide to make whipped cream. Read it careful if you haven’t done whipping fresh cream before.
While whipping fresh cream, make sure to be quick. The entire process should be done in chilling condition.
Take a big bowl, add ice cubes at the bottom. Place the chilled bowl on the ice cubes.
Add chilled thick fresh cream to this bowl.
Using hand electric beater, start whipping at high-speed using chilled whipping blades. Whip the fresh cream for 5 minutes. Do not whip for long time, you will end up making butter instead of whipped cream.

After 5 minutes, you get soft peak whipped cream. At this point stop whipping. Whipped cream is ready for ice cream base.
The whipped cream will increase in volume compared to fresh cream.
Preparing double chocolate ice cream
Add the chocolate chips to the whipped cream. Next add the chocolate mixture that is cocoa powder and condensed milk mixture.
Mix whipping cream and chocolate mixture gently. Do not be harsh on the mixture.
Over mixing will release all the air created in the whipping cream.
Gently fold the mixture into the whipping cream.
Pour this mixture into a container or keep as it in the same bowl.
Close with a foil tightly and freeze for 9 to 10 hours or overnight. Freeze until the ice cream is set.
Before serving, you can keep the ice cream at room temperature for 1 to 2 minutes. This slightly softens the ice cream. Makes it easier to scoop out the ice cream.
Serve this tasty creamy double delight chocolate ice cream with toppings of choice like nuts, sprinkles, cherries, chocolate chips.
It can also be topped with hot chocolate sauce.
Thick low fat fresh cream – This can be substituted with heavy cream.
Condensed milk – This helps in adding to the texture of ice cream, so do not replace this.
Cocoa powder – Medium coloured cocoa powder can be replaced with desirable dark cocoa powder.
Chocolate chips – chocolate chips can be replaced with chocolate chunks.

What kind of cocoa powder is used?
Any good quality cocoa powder can be used. If you want strong flavour of chocolate in ice cream, then use strong flavoured cocoa powder.
Can we make it vegan?
I have not tried dairy free or vegan version of this recipe. You can always try with coconut cream.
Can we add only cocoa powder?
Yes you can add only cocoa powder but as the recipe name says its double chocolate!!
However, if we add chocolate chips, you get the chocolate in every bite.
Can we add chocolate chunks?
Yes we can add finely chopped chocolate chunks. They add nice texture and flavour to the ice cream.
Can we use high fat fresh cream?
Yes you can add high fat fresh cream for making whipped cream. Its usually 30% fat fresh cream that’s available in the market.
Can we add icing sugar while whipping the cream?
Yes icing sugar can be added to whip the fresh cream. This helps to get the peak early while whipping.
Can we add extra topping?
Homemade ice creams are good for desirable toppings. It adds extra flavour to double chocolate ice cream.
Can we add big chocolate chips?
Yes we can add big chocolate chips. This gives nice crunch to the ice cream.
Can we use whipping powder?
Whipping powder can be used to make the whipping cream. However make sure to follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
Can we use ready to use whipped cream?
If you are not comfortable with whipping fresh cream at home, can use readymade whipped cream. This also serves the purpose.
Double chocolate ice cream can be slightly modified by folding the chocolate mixture halfway in the whipped cream. This creates a great chocolate swirl ice cream.
